The Ferrari 288 GTO, built from 1984 to 1987, was born to homologate Ferrari for Group B racing, though that series folded before the car ever competed. Instead it became a road-going legend and the spiritual forerunner of the F40. Its twin-turbocharged 2.9-liter V8, derived from the 308's block, produced 400 horsepower and 496 Nm of torque, propelling the lightweight 1160 kg composite-and-steel body to 100 km/h in around 5 seconds and on to a top speed of 288 km/h, the number that gave the car its name. A 5-speed manual sent power to the rear wheels. Only 272 examples were built, each a landmark blending 308 GTB styling cues with race-bred engineering, making the 288 GTO one of the most coveted and historically significant Ferraris ever produced.
